Shenandoah River State Park - 350 Daughter of Stars Dr, Bentonville, Virginia (about half way between Front Royal and Luray)
Totally recommend! We will be going back!
We discovered the park through the #firstdayhike initiative this year and it was a gem! First of all, we had a delightful hike in the drizzling rain with #friendsofshenandoahriverstatepark to celebrate the new year. The guides were a husband and wife team who were so friendly and welcoming.
✅ We were surprised that the park only opened in 1999.
✅ Only about 1.5 hrs from DC
✅ We hiked the 1.5 mile Cottonwood trail which was an easy hike. There are other trails that may be more challenging.
✅ Scenic views of the river, Massanutten Mountain to the west and Shenandoah National Park to the east.
✅ Beautiful views from the Everett Culler Overlook. You must check it out!
✅ 5.2 miles of shoreline and 24 miles of trails
✅ Mountain biking
✅ Canoeing, kayaking and fishing
✅ Cabins, tent, RV camping (camping sites close to the river!), and yurts!
✅ A very nice visitor’s center with clean restrooms
✅ Very well-maintained
